Lyburn Pumpkin and Squash

Why do we have a web site that is dedicated to Pumpkins and Squash?, I hear you ask. Simply put, because there are people like you out there, that are looking for more information, on what has to be one of the most wholesome and versatile vegetables.

Having grown them for some 25 years now, and given that during the season, which runs from August to April. Lyburn Farm is situated on the northern edge of the New Forest, on the Hampshire Wiltshire borders, between the villages of Nomansland, Hamptworth, and Landford and extends to approximately 450 acres. We grow a range of Pumpkin and Squash, some organic and some non- organic. The squash varieties we grow are Crown Prince, Kabocha (Hokkaido), Onion squash, Acorn squash, and Gem squash Then occasionally we will have some Butternut Squash as well.

Straddling the small river Blackwater, Lyburn Farm has been farmed by the Smales family and Mike and Judy in particular for the last 40 years. The river Blackwater rises on some of the high ground of the forest and as the heather and gorse gives way, to the old ancient oak forest, home of the fallow deer, the countryside falls away sharply towards the north. In the bottom of the valley you will find the Hamptworth estate, of which Lyburn farm is part. The name Lyburn, is in fact quite unique, it is derived from the Scottish, lye 'born', and burn 'river', 'borne by the river', and with the Blackwater on either side we certainly are.

The principal activity is a dairy herd of 180 cows producing milk for the cheese plant and Watsons who bottle milk and distribute into London and surounding areas. But in recent times, the growth in our vegetable enterprise means that we are continually looking for new ideas and outlets for the Pumpkin, and Squash crops. Along side the pumpkin and the cows we run approximatly 100 acres of organic vegetables.
