December 2024

Farmers as far as the eye can see.

News from the World Cheese Awards. It is the 6th of December and we have just been told that Stoney Cross has just won Best British Cheese at the World Cheese Awards and the SCA prize as well. Stoney Cross has had a wonderful year helped by the fact that about 18 months ago, we took the decision to knock the rough edges off of it and tidy it up a bit. Not only do they taste lovely they now also look great. We try and sell them at a consistent 8 weeks old and will be eaten at 10 weeks. We are completely sold out for Christmas, and will re build new stocks for next year.

It should be noted that until the middle of 2024 our cheeses had an egg allergen warning, but this is no longer the case and is egg, (Lysozyme), free, in Stoney Cross, Lyburn Gold, Lyburn Smoked and the Garlic and Nettle. However Winchester and Old Winchester still have an egg allergen on them, being older cheeses it will be a while until they become egg free.

You will be pleased to hear that we have finally resolved the phone issue. While the Government and Open-reach are busily opening up 5G for all the towns and urban areas in the country, the country areas are to be ignored and left with NO phones unless they resort to Starlink for connection, due to the pathetic broadband offering.
Nothing changes with the Government waging war on the countryside.

The dust is now starting to settle over the Government’s recent budget and their budget for growth. In doing so they have upset just about every business, butcher, baker and candlestick maker in the country not to mention the farming community. In preparing this budget, The Chancellor has either been badly advised by the civil service, or very naive, or just plain incompetent but probably all three. None of us are impressed by her new CV, and her attack on the countryside and business in general will not drive growth, it will send us all heading for cover. The lady from the Halifax is out of her depth and would do well to listen to those that have the ability to deliver growth or it will all end up in an even bigger black hole. Kier Starmers big re-launch speech with is 6 big targets, is just pie in the sky, having completely alienated the entire business community. When in a hole, stop digging.

Our Pasteuriser has been broken down for several weeks. The heat exchanger plates had sprung a leak, and to cut a very long story short, we have had to buy a complete, new set of 85 plates as the old ones were past their sell by date. This means that we have had a break in production, unfortunately. We might just get by for Christmas, but we are going to be short of product in the new year.
