After the wet of the winter, we now have huge heat of summer, Tuesday of the New Forest Show much too hot, but a great success all the same, Weather has been too hot for runner beans, they don’t like the extreme heat, but fine for the pumpkin, courgette and sweetcorn. Irrigation running flat out, still plenty of water in the reservoir and the River Blackwater, and so there should be after last winter. A Silver medal for Stoney Cross at the Nantwich Show, a little bonus to end the month.

Enjoying the heat, a large number of new vineyards coming to fruition in Hampshire. The picture alongside is Jenkyn Place, Bentworth. Simon Blaydon hosted a wine and cheese evening for 30, as part of the Hampshire Food festival. The vines looked fantastic, laden with young grape, having missed the spring frosts. The weather for the evening was just about as good as you get, it was perfect, great evening.
