Organic Courgette at Lyburn Farm.

As this summer slowly unravels within the vegetable fields there are winners and losers and more importantly it is not all bad news. The Broad Beans were losers. We had a great crop but the heat just pushed things along too quickly and we could not keep up with them and they went over, but the beans were great quality while we had them. Next, the courgette are in great form and they love this weather provided there is water. Fortunately we dug a reservoir in 1995 and we still have plenty of water, but it wont want to be this hot all summer. Using trickle irrigation is a great bonus, as we are able to water little and often with no evaporation, the plants are responding and we have a fantastic crop of very high quality product, and it growing so quickly that we are having to cut a few onto the ground as they have grown too big and they think they are marrows. Runner beans are looking good but still several weeks away, but they really don’t like very hot weather. The sweetcorn like the weather but are showing some signs of stress, and the pumpkin are just loving it, but will be small if we don’t get rain. It wont be this hot all summer will it????

Apologies with regard to DHL deliveries. They have completely lost the plot in the last few months with no signs of it improving and the hot weather making it even worse.
