April 2024

Maize drilling

It’s mid April and finally stopped raining, the cows have been out for several days, probably two weeks later than normal. There is a huge amount of grass out there and the wetter fields need to be avoided for a few days but at least we are up and running.
It is now warm enough and dry enough to start drilling maize in what is now perfect conditions.
Having signed up for Countryside Stewardship, yet another set of rules and regulations to follow, however on the plus side we are to be paid for this. Some of this will be quite easy for us as we have 100 acres of Organic ground and about 7 miles of hedges, winter cover crops and a couple of Lapwing plots, I just hope the Lapwings appreciate their new accommodation.
